Set a default browser

You can set your favorite browser to open automatically every time you click a link. When you open most browsers it’ll ask if you’d like to set it as your default browser. Follow the steps below to make sure your favorite browser is set as the default.

Steps for Yahoo supported browsers


Verified for version 35

  1. Click the Tools icon Image of the Google Chrome settings icon. | select Options.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Click Make Firefox My Default Browser.
  4. Select Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Restart Firefox.

Verified for version 40

  1. Click the Chrome menu icon Image of the Google Chrome settings icon. | select Settings.
    - The “Settings” tab appears.
  2. Under "Default browser,” click Make Google Chrome the default browser.
    - If already set it will say “The default browser is currently Google Chrome.”
  3. Close the “Settings” tab.


Mac OS X is set to Safari by default, but you can choose your prefered browser using the same steps.

Verified for OS X Yosemite

  1. Click the Apple Menu  | select System Preferences.
  2. Click General.
  3. Select a browser from the “Default web browser” dropdown menu.

Verified for OS X Mavericks or earlier

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Click Safari | select Preferences.
    - The “Safari Preferences” window appears.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Select a browser from the “Default web browser” dropdown menu.
  5. Close the “Safari Preferences” window.

Internet Explorer

Verified for Version 11

  1. Click the Tools icon Tools menu icon | select Internet options.
  2. Click the Programs tab.
  3. Under “Default web browser,” click Make default.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart Internet Explorer.


Verified for version 4.4

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap Application manager.
  3. Tap or swipe to the All tab.
  4. Tap the current browser that opens links.
  5. Tap Clear Defaults.
  6. Tap a link in an Android application.
  7. Tap your preferred browsers icon.
  8. Tap Always.


iOS doesn't support setting a default browser. It opens everything in Safari by default.

Don't forget to set your homepage and default search engine to Yahoo.
